A briar patch is a “thicket formed by any number of unrelated thorny parts.” The briar patch figures prominently in the escape route of “Brer Rabbit,” the trickster figure in African American folktales in the mid-1800s.

Earl “Petey” Hull
Villager Earl "Petey" Hull died July 1, 2024; he was 83. Visitaiton will be held Friday, July 19, 10 a.m., with services at 11 a.m., at Central Chapel, AME, 411 S. High St. Interment will be in the Hull Family plot at Tar Box Cemetery in Wilberforce. A full obituary will appear in an upcoming issue of the News.
