Pirates lead Minor League

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The Pirates brought their lead to 3–0 in the Minor Leagues last week, as the Dragons defeated the Cubs 11–2 on Monday, June 9, while the Reds notched their first win of the season by overcoming the Dragons 8–7 on Wednesday, June 11. The week’s final game that day saw Jared Scarfpin knock in the tying and winning runs with a triple at the bottom of the fifth to complete the Pirates’ come-from-behind 5–4 victory over a tough Yankees team. Poor field conditions resulting from rains forced the cancellation of all weekend games.

In the Dragons v. Cubs game, Rhona Marion and Kylie Arnett led the way by each hitting a pair of base hits in as many times at bat and scoring two runs each. Grant Reigelsperger, along with brothers Taran and Zane Pergram, each hit a pair of singles in three at bats, and scored a run, with Reigelsperger knocking in two more and Zane Pergram getting a single RBI. Jake Savage added a run after hitting three singles in as many trips to the plate. Danny Grote and Laura Chase also each added a run after their base hits in two at bats. Tony Marinelli knocked in a run from one of his two base hits while Sam Bloom and Olivia Greco also helped out with base hits. Game balls were awarded to both Reigelsperger and Marinelli, who also each caught fly balls and threw a base runner out for a double play.

Adam Green of the Cubs made a similar defensive play, catching a fly ball at third and throwing a runner out for his own double play. At the plate, he led the Cubs effort by hitting a pair of base hits, scoring a run and knocking in one more. Cameron Haught, James Fulton and Ethan Perkins all went two-for-two as well, with Haught adding an RBI. Kennedy Harshaw scored the team’s other run after her base hit, while Kaner Butler and Meranda Pelzl also each had a base hit in two at bats.

In the Reds v. Dragons game, Ethan DeWine led the scoring with two runs off his three base hits in as many tries, while Jaron Fox also managed three singles. But it was the team’s younger players who made the difference late in the game. Lauryn DeWine went two for three with a single and a double and scoring a run. Christian Elam and Weymar Osborne each had a base hit and scored a run, while Jacob Woodburn hit two singles and scored a run as well. Christian Werner smacked a double and scored a run, while Tom Amrhein also scored once off his base hit, as well as made a great “snow cone” catch of a fly ball.

The Dragons played tough, led by Zane Pergram who went two for two with a pair of singles, scored a run and knocked two RBIs. Aman Ngqakayi, Jake Savage and Danny Grote each hit a pair of base hits and scored once, with Ngqakayi and Savage each adding an RBI. Grant Reigelsperger smashed a triple and later scored a run, while Tony Marinelli knocked in two runs with a single and Desiree’ Clark notched an RBI off her base hit.

In the Pirates v. Yankees game, the Pirates began the last inning down 4–2. Jacob Whetsel hit his second single of the game following the first out, followed by Aaron Sherwood’s second single of the game to put two on. Nathan Miller stepped to the plate and pounded a double that scored Whetsel to make it 4–3 with one out and two on. Scarfpin crushed his triple, scoring Sherwood as the tying run and Miller as the winning run. Both Sherwood and Whetsel scored earlier in the game after hitting singles. The Pirates mounted a strong defense as well, with Augie Knemeyer catching a foul tip as catcher while his teammates put the Yankees out in order in the second inning and wrapped up the last inning with a double play.

But the Yankees kept it close, jumping out to a 2–0 first inning lead when Olivia and Ian Chick each singled and were both then knocked in by Liam Weigand’s hard hit triple. Cameron Croft led off the third inning with a single, which was followed by base hits from Jackson Bleything, his first-ever hit, and then Kenny McKinley, which scored Croft and give the Yankees a 3–1 lead. They added another run in the top of the fifth when Ben Croft scored after hitting a double and then crossed the plate on Danny Horton’s single to make it 4–2 as the Pirates came to bat in the bottom of the fifth to mount their exciting comeback and push their record to 3–0.
