Enough signatures

The Greene County Board of Elections has verified that a sufficient number of signatures were collected to put on the November ballot a referendum on public funding of the Center for Business and Education, or CBE, according to Board of Elections Deputy Director Nancy Johannes on Tuesday. Organizers needed a minimum of 310 signatures of registered Yellow Springs voters and collected 570 signatures, out of which 465 were valid. The deadline for submitting the petition was last week.

However, the official certification of the referendum will not be final until Aug. 18, when the GCBE board meets, she said.

Organizers of the petition want villagers to vote on the proposed $1 million in public funding for the CBE commerce park infrastructure, which Council approved several months ago. Supporters of the CBE funding say the commerce park is critical to local economic development, while opponents question the viability of the project and whether the Village would recoup its investment.
