Filling in the frame

They look frail and timid, crepe unfurling on all but dead sticks. They get teased out with first warmth, then battered by indifferent wind and rain, often falling limp after a sudden freeze. But they’re the vanguard of a hardier army that will soon fill in the empty branches, seeming to shrink our streets and alleys back down to summer size.
