Farmers market to accept SNAP benefits
- Published: April 28, 2017
SNAP benefits — formerly “food stamps” — will now be accepted at the YS Farmers Market, thanks to the work and contributions of Michele Burns, Community Solutions, Homefull and the YS Credit Union.
The Electronic Benefit Transfer, of EBT, equipment will be set up at a table at the market beginning Saturday, May 6, and will be available year-round. EBT card users will be able to swipe their card in exchange for wooden tokens that can be used like cash at the market; at the end of the day, vendors will turn in the tokens they’ve received and be reimbursed.
In addition to accepting EBT cards, the equipment can accept credit and debit cards to facilitate transactions between consumers and vendors when that service is needed.
