Mayor to make proclamation at 10th annual Simply Women 5K
- Published: June 25, 2018
The 10th annual Simply Women Ohio 5K Run/Walk for women and girls will be held Saturday, June 30, 9 a.m., at YSHS. The race is organized by Simply Women Ohio, a local nonprofit maintained by Yellow Spring students.
Simply Women was founded in 2009 by then-YS students Reini Brickson and Paloma Wiggins as YS Girls Running to create a space for young women and girls to participate in school-based sports in meaningful ways. Though the initial iteration of the group focused on running sports, after the first Simply Women 5K race was held to raise funds for the nonprofit, the group’s mission changed to include all girls’ and women’s sports and the name of the nonprofit was changed. Now, Simply Women not only supports young women’s athletics and the purchase of uniforms and equipment, but educational programs for girls and young women in local schools.
Women and girls of all ages are invited to participate in the event; the course of the 5K begins at YSHS and runs through Yellow Springs. Registration fee is $30; runners will receive a hat for an additional $10. Registration may be completed online by clicking here. Runners may also register on the day of the race from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit female athletes and sports at YSHS.
Mayor Pam Conine will be on hand on race day to share a mayoral proclamation declaring June 30, 2018, as Simply Women Day in Yellow Springs. For more information on the organization or the event, visit the group’s website at http://www.simplywomenohio.org.
