  • Amid pandemic, Friends Care Community’s ho-ho-holidays

The holidays are festive, if lower-key, at Friends Care Community this year. Visitation has been restricted at the facility since March.

  • Senior Center to reopen Monday

That door will open again on Monday, Oct. 19, as the Senior Center welcomes seniors back with a “Coffee and Donuts with Friends” event.

  • Senior Center reopening halted

After the announcement that Greene County had been elevated to level 3, or “red,” by the Ohio Public Health Advisory System, the YS Senior Center has halted its plan to reopen for in-person events. The elevation to level 3 indicates “very high exposure or spread” of COVID-19.

  • Elder Stories: Painter Jack Merrill

Merrill is known by some in the village as a quiet and tenacious artist who painted exuberantly, if privately, through nearly five decades of living and working in Yellow Springs.

  • Home, Inc. senior apartments— A closer look at developer

The grand opening of the Riverside Senior Lofts, a Dayton affordable senior housing project developed by St. Mary Development Corporation, took place Friday, Nov. 16. The project, shown above, includes 48 units, both apartments and cottages. St. Mary Development Corporation will also be the developer and property manager of the proposed affordable senior rental project in Yellow Springs, in collaboration with Home, Inc. That project would feature 54 units on 1.8 acres on Xenia Avenue, behind the new fire station and across from Friends Care Community. (Submitted photo)

Created in 1989, St. Mary Development Corporation grew from a partnership between a Catholic nun and a Centerville parishioner. Within a few years, they had purchased their first site for affordable senior housing. For the pending Yellow Springs project, Home, Inc. will provide most of the service component.

Last Monday’s Village Planning Commission meeting was standing room only as villagers aired their thoughts on Home, Inc.’s proposed 54-unit affordable senior apartment building between East Herman and East Marshall streets.

  • A good year for new Friends Care director

Mike Montgomery has been director of the Friends Care Community for almost a year, having begun in early December 2017. Since beginning the job, he's most proud of making some changes that contributed to raising staff morale, and adding new staff. (Photo by Diane Chiddister)

While Mike Montgomery is the executive director of Friends Care Community, he takes a modest position regarding how critical he is to the functioning of the local continuing care center.

  • In September, a focus on dementia

The 18-month-long Dementia Friendly Yellow Springs project is organizing several activities for September, World Alzheimer’s Month. When organizers for the Dementia Friendly Yellow Springs, or DFYS, project held a community book read last winter on a book about dementia, they were encouraged by the hardy response.
