A Damselfly (in the suborder Zygoptera) poses, seeming to know how pretty it is (photo by Aaron Zaremsky)

I really wanted a patriotic animal to put up this week, but sadly I couldn’t get a majestic shot of a Bald Eagle. You’ll have to settle for a Damselfly.

While definitely not as regal as our nation’s symbol, the damselfly is attractive in its own way. It has a beautiful bright metallic sheen, and it looks like something out of science fiction. It is related to the dragonfly, it’s bigger cousin and one of the fastest insects in the world. You can find them in the Glen where there is any type of water.
