‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ opens this weekend

The Yellow Springs Theater Company will open the third annual “Summer Shakespeare Shindig” with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this weekend. Performances will be held Fridays and Saturdays, July 13, 14, 20 and 21, beginning at 8 p.m.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of The Bard’s classic comedies, following a quartet of confused young lovers as fairies meddle with their love lives; meanwhile, a troupe of roving actors readies themselves to perform for a high-profile wedding, and gets pulled into the fairies’ schemes. The play was performed more than 60 years ago as part of the “Shakespeare Under the Stars” festival, to which the “Summer Shakespeare Shindig” pays homage. “Shakespeare Under the Stars” ran in summers at Antioch College from 1952 to 1956, spearheaded by Arthur Lithgow and Meredith Dallas; click here to listen to a podcast from the Folger Library with John and Robin Lithgow and Yellow Springs’ own Tony Dallas about the festival.
Performances will be held outside behind Mills Lawn Elementary School, with live music provided by James Johnston and the YS Community Orchestra. Those attending are asked to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Admission is free, and donations will be gladly accepted. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on school grounds. Performances will be held rain or shine.
