  The Yellow Springs schools have recommended two principals for Yellow Springs High School and for Mills Lawn Elementary to be approved by the school board at the board’s meeting on Thursday, April 8.

  Three school superintendent candidates will visit the village next week, and the community is invited to hear from them, ask questions and get involved in choosing at meetings, Mon.–Wed., April 5–7, from 5:40 to 7:15 p.m.

• Schools hire new treasurer

  Yellow Springs Board of Education members unanimously voted to approve the hiring of a new treasurer for the Yellow Springs schools at the board’s March 11 meeting. Dawn Weller will begin service to the district on April 5, 2010, at an annual salary of $99,700 on a three-year contract. Weller comes to the district after 13 years as treasurer of the Greenon Local School District in Enon.

• Fairy tale-come-true for YSHS playwright contest winners

The result, according to organizers of a regional high school playwriting challenge, is vivid characters that dare to leap out of insightful and witty scripts up and onto the stage.

  When Joyce McCurdy accepted a teaching position in the Yellow Springs School District, there was a black chief of police, a black member of Council, and a black member of school board. The principal of the high school was black, and three of McCurdy’s colleagues were also black — and actively involved in the social issues of the day. The year was 1965.

  The annual Yellow Springs High School One-Act Plays are upon us again, this year led predominantly by members of the junior class. The plays this year include everything from awkward situations to a not-so-super hero, mixed up fairy tales, a mad scientist, blind dates, Power Rangers, war stories and a French-teaching superman. Even with new guidelines put into place by the students themselves, the one-acts are sure to be as good as ever.
