Summer Strings to host concert and musical bake sale
- Published: June 30, 2010
Shirley Mullins’ Summer Strings youth orchestra will play its 47th grand finale this Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Kings Yard. The young musicians, who are concluding a two-week camp, can also be heard playing all over the village on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. as part of a musical bake sale.
“We don’t charge enough to cover our expenses, so the bake sale helps sustain the summer music program,” said Mullins, who will be selling cookies and breads in front of Downing’s hardware store on Saturday.
Mullins started the youth orchestra in Yellow Springs in 1965 and has been at the helm ever since. In addition to the Summer Strings camp, she runs an orchestra program in partnership with Mills Lawn school.
“The program has changed over the years, but the basic idea is to give quality music instruction,” she said.
The musicians will play a wide variety of pieces at the free evening concert, including a Russian folk song.
Complimentary refreshments and free ballons will be available at the event, which is geared toward families and children.
