Banner festival coming soon!
- Published: January 9, 2012
Anyone interested in putting a design on a banner and hanging it up downtown is welcome to take part in the “not quite annual” banner festival this year, according to organizer Maxine Skuba. An introductory meeting will be held tonight, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center, and a “work bee” will take place Sunday, Jan. 22, from 1–3 p.m., also at the Senior Center. Participants are not required to attend either event.
Anyone is invited to take part, and past banner makers have included local artists, local non-artists, groups of school children, and parents and children. There are no restrictions regarding what designs may be used, with the single exception of no advertising. Past banner designs have included scenes from the natural world, abstract designs, superheroes, humorous themes, and local places or people.
The banner festival has been held for more than 20 years, according to Skuba, who was the original organizer of the event. The impetus was to brighten up downtown during sometimes dreary winter months.
“I love public art,” Skuba said. “And this is a wonderful display of colors in the dead of winter.”
The banners will be displayed for about six weeks beginning in mid-February.
