Yellow Springs News wins General Excellence award

For the third year in a row, the Yellow Springs News won the top prize for small weekly papers in the annual Ohio Newspaper Association conference in Columbus on Feb. 14. The News staff attended the convention to receive 12 awards for writing, news coverage, photography and design in the small newspapers category. The News competed in most categories of the Osman C. Hooper Newspaper Awards Division D, with 16 other papers with a circulation of 882–3,200, although in some categories the paper competed with all 59 weeklies entered in the contest. 

Following is the awards breakdown:
News coverage: 3rd place (Megan Bachman, Diane Chiddister, Lauren Heaton)
In-depth reporting: 2nd place for series on local water (Bachman, Chiddister, Heaton)
Local feature: 1st place (Bachman) “Tiny world of Ellen Dawson Witt”

Editorial: 5th place and 1st place, competing with all papers (Chiddister)
Best original column: 1st place (Bachman)
Feature photo: 2nd place (Heaton) “Yoga in the library”
Feature photo: 1st place (Bachman) “Historic Xenia Ave.” “If there’s a sweepstakes photo, this would be it” —a judge
Sports photo: 2nd place (Bachman) “High jump”
Headline: 1st place, competing with all papers (Matt Minde) “The Village is breaking out in hives”
Special edition: 2nd place (everyone) Guide to Yellow Springs 2011, “Coming to the table”
Community awareness: 1st place for series on local water, competing with all papers (Bachman, Chiddister, Heaton)
 
The contest covered issues from August 2011 to August 2012.
