Bulldogs sweep pole vault
The YSHS boys track and field team was defeated by Emanuel Christian last week in dual meet action by a score of 101–41 but turned in several admirable performances. The Bulldogs swept the pole vault competition as Eli Biggs (first place) and Oluka Okia (second place) both cleared 8´6˝ and broke personal records. David Butcher came in third. Connor Gravley-Novello sped to a first-place finish in the 1600-meter run with a season-best time of 5:21.08. The other first-place finish was earned by Okia in the high jump with a leap of 5´4˝.

Second-place finishes were turned in by Ed Johnson (400-meter run in 59.04), Gravley-Norvello (3200-meter in 11:26.78), Roland Newsome (long jump of 17´6’’) and Dylan Boczar (300-meter hurdles in 47.31). In third place were Biggs (long jump of 16´5˝w), Cameron Henderson (200-meter run in 26.52) and Bryce White (100-meters in 12.55).

Personal bests were also earned by Kalonji Cross, Charlie Fenimore, Devon Perry and Aaron Sherwood.
At the 14-team highly competitive Southeastern Invitational the top Bulldog finish of seventh place was earned by the 800-meter relay team consisting of Henderson, White, Biggs and Ed Johnson (1:41.02).

Tennis team guts out win

The YSHS tennis team traveled twice last week and played much stronger tennis. The team brought home a win against Stivers — its first of the year — when junior Grant Reigelsperger gutted out a two-and-a-half hour singles match to win in three sets.

Although the Bulldogs dropped all courts on Monday against Division I opponent Beavercreek, both team’s coaches saw that Gabriel Day was the player of the day, according to Coach Donna Silvert.
Nick Miller Jacobson and Reed Huston also had some beautiful low strokes in play with highly experienced Beavercreek players. In the week ahead, Silvert expects stronger play by Jacobson, Reigelsperger, Liam Creighton and Theron Orme who have hit many more balls in competitive play since last facing these opponents the first time. Freshmen Day, Henry Potts-Rubin and Meredith Rowe spent focused practice time preparing for this week’s matches. Reserve players who are also ready to see action this week are Reed Huston, Fielding Lewis, Maeve Korkan-Laughlin, Carolyn Handy, Alice Miller and Madeline Nielsen.

Softball comeback falls short
The YSHS softball team continued to improve over two games this week. On Tuesday they played their home opener versus Emmanuel Christian. YSHS fell behind early and then mounted a comeback before losing by a score of 17–7.

Junior Sierra Lawrence was the hitting and pitching star for the Lady Bulldogs. Lawrence batted 3 for 3, driving in three booming extra base hits to the outfield to the tune of a triple and two doubles. She also had four runs batted in and a run scored for the night.

“Sierra is clearly my most athletic player on the team and she proved that tonight with her extra base hits to the outfield,” Coach Jimmy DeLong said.

Excelling at the plate were Jesi Worsham and Chelsea Horton, who combined to get on base four times and score four runs. Sophomore Modjeska Chavez had a long double over the outfielder’s head and Evelyn Greene was 1 for 2 with a walk, base hit and run scored.

At Dayton Christian later in the week, Worsham continued her torrid hitting streak as she went two for three and scored the only run for the Lady Bulldogs when she got a single and stole second and third and came home on a passed ball.

“Jesi’s my leadoff hitter because she’s a fast, aggressive runner and she used that speed to literally steal a run for our team,” DeLong said. Sophomore Maddie Gueth and Chavez also contributed hits for the Bulldogs but it wasn’t enough as they lost to Dayton Christian.

Fulton, Orme McKinney champs
Kaliyah Fulton and Hayden Orme proved to be the two most versatile track athletes this year at Saturday’s McKinney Championships.

Fulton ran a 15.60 over 100 meters, improved her own school record in the pole vault to the new height of 6´6˝, catapulted the shot put to 26´3˝ and finished the competition with 3:06.99 over 800 meters collecting a total of 189 points.

Hayden Orme finished the 100-meter hurdles in 18.44, leaped 17´7.5˝ in the long jump, tossed the shot to 20´6˝ and finished the 800-meter run in 2:22.22 missing the school record by three seconds. He scored a total of 202 points.
