  • Inside Collaborative Community — The power of positive stories

The YS Community Foundation Encore Miller Fellows helped support the Courageous Conservations series, organized by The 365 Project and the Yellow Springs Havurah to address issues of race. Here, one local group met earlier this year. From left is David Seitz, Vivian Markley, Kirk Weigand, Megan Bachman, Mori Rothman, Karen McKee, Moya Shea, Marianne MacQueen, Lauren Heaton (obscured), and Locksley Orr. Also participating in the group was Rich Bullock and Encore Miller Fellow Jalyn Roe, who co-facilitated with MacQueen. A new round of Courageous Conversations is starting up in the fall. Those interested in participating should contact Encore Miller Fellow Len Kramer at len2654@gmail.com, or 937-572-4840. (Submitted photo)

In the fall of 2018, the Yellow Springs Community Foundation hired four individuals to help enhance connections and opportunities for interaction among our community students, seniors and nonprofits. I joined the others late in November, especially to help the group focus on stories and creative endeavors.

The Sea Dogs had an amazing season this year. This was an exciting summer, with lots of young and new swimmers.

  • Classroom climate — How do YSHS students learn?

One factor that impacts student learning is the physical environment. Many survey respondents stated that the type of seating arrangement helps them learn, and that they mainly preferred classroom seats arranged in u-shapes (left) or in clusters, and not in rows (right). In education, presenting information is only half the battle. The classroom environment, both physical and social, and the way information is presented also has an impact on student learning.

When looking at problems at Yellow Springs High School, it’s hard not see the distraction and lack of motivation among students.

  • A YSHS/news collaboration: YSHS lunches get mixed reviews

At lunchtime at YSHS this spring, left, Sumayah Chappelle looked optimistic about her lunch, while Alexis Longshaw and Romel Phillips didn’t appear to be pleased with their meals. (Photos by Sokhna Sene)

As part of John Day’s Psychology/Sociology class at YSHS, I investigated school lunches for an assignment looking at school issues.

  • Play ball, already!— 150-year-old game finally fielded

The Antioch Nine were pitched against the Cincinnati Red Stockings in a makeup for a rain game that was called over 150 years ago. A perfect evening accommodated the May 31, 2019, period re-enactment, which drew nearly 100 fans and saw the Red Stockings beat the Antioch Nine by seven runs. (Photo by Megan Bachman)

It took 150 years to make up the game after it was rained out, but on Friday, May 31, the Cincinnati Red Stockings finally prevailed 14–7 over the local Antioch Nine on the Antioch College campus.

It was during the late 1970s at an idyllic riverfront property in Clifton that a group of Yellow Springers came to form a legendary, diverse social club.

  • Bulldog track boasts larger squads

Annlynn Foster, above, and teammate Sophia Lawson were standouts Wednesday, March 27, when the Bulldogs opened their track season in a five-team meet at Springfield Shawnee. Both Foster and Lawson earned first-place finishes, with Foster in the 100 hurdles and Lawson in the pole vault. Both girls also were part of the first-place 400-meter relay team that included Malaya Booth and Haneefah Jones. (Photo by Kathleen Galarza)

Both the boys and girls track squads this spring boast the largest number of participants in several years — the boys squad has 21 athletes while the girls boast a robust squad of 17 participants.
