  • Commissions make a difference

    Village commissions, staffed by appointed citizens and elected officials, are fundamental to the functioning of Village government. While the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Community Access Panel, and Economic Sustainability Commission are not currently seeking volunteers, they offer opportunity for direct citizen involvement in governmental affairs.

  • Village Station gets approval

    At its April 12 meeting Village Planning Commission renewed a conditional use permit for a commercial and residential development at 150 Railroad Street at the corner of Dayton Street that had been dormant for nearly three years.

  • Council considers revised land use plan

    The Urban Service Area (shown within the thick black lines) is the area, some of which is outside current Village boundaries, that can mainly be served by gravity sewer and has been identified by a previous Council as the boundary for potential growth, should it occur.

    The often contentious issue of annexation sparked conflict between Council members during the July 6 meeting of Village Council. At issue was the language in the Yellow Springs Comprehensive Plan, which was recently revised by Planning Commission. The plan, which is the land use plan for the village, is revised by the planners and submitted for Council approval every five to seven years.

  • FCC senior apartments put on hold

    The senior apartment building that Friends Care Community plans to build downtown has been delayed due to financing issues, Friends Care Director Karl Zalar said last week. Friends had hoped to break ground this spring on the project at the corner of Xenia Avenue and Limestone Street.

  • Council split on land plan

    At the June 1 meeting of Yellow Springs Village Council, Council members differed sharply on the appropriateness of Council making changes in the Village Comprehensive Land Use Plan at this time. The plan was recently revised by the Planning Commission and submitted to Council for approval.

    An alternative veterinary office will soon be a new business on the corner of Stafford and Union Streets, after Village Planning Commission approved at its Monday, June 8 meeting a proposal to turn an unoccupied house into a small clinic.

    Should Village economic development efforts focus on strengthening local resources or working with regional partnerships? Should the bulk of money earmarked for development be used to pay a staff person, or instead to develop local resources? Is transparency appropriate to the economic development process?

  • Planning Commission news—Senior apartments approved

    After lengthy consideration over what most of the Village Planning Commission members said was a “disappointing” response from the developers to their concerns about the project, planners at their meeting Monday, March 9, approved final plans for the Friends Care Community senior apartments.

  • Barr conditions approved

    At their July 21 meeting, Village Council members unanimously passed a resolution identifying conditions to be met for the Friends Care Community’s planned development for senior apartments.

  • No patio homes for Birch III

    At Village Planning Commission’s meeting Monday, July 14, Birch III developer Mark Bertke requested feedback on an idea to build attached multiplex homes in the partially developed neighborhood on the south end of town.
