Survey highlights concerns of special needs parents
Most parents of special needs children in the Yellow Springs school system are satisfied with their children’s program. However, the level of satisfaction drops considerably when the child moves from Mills Lawn to the middle school and high school, where a lack of communication between parents and teachers, and teachers with each other, are perceived areas of discontent.

Boys soccer beats Greenview The YSHS boys soccer team beat the Greeneview Rams 3–2 on the road Saturday, Oct. 10. Lois Miller won the third race of her freshman year on Saturday, Sept. 26, taking the title at the 28th annual Bellbrook cross country invitational. The Lady Bulldogs, with 59 points, improved their season record by taking home the second place trophy, just behind Bellbrook with 25 points, and ahead of Wilmington in third with 69.

MLS drops rank to ‘effective’
This year Mills Lawn School has dropped a tier in the state ranking system, from “excellent” to “effective,” because of lower demonstrated proficiencies on the Ohio Achievement Test. The YSHS football team lost 51–6 to Toronto High School on Friday, Sept. 18.
Bulldog Roland Newsome brought down Toronto’s kickoff at their 30-yard line, but the visitors scored in the first three minutes of the game. That was followed by four touch downs in the first quarter.

The Yellow Springs High School girls soccer team lost 3–0 to Miami Valley on Saturday, Aug. 29, and then fell hard at 9–0 against Tecumseh on Monday, Aug. 31. The scores did not tell the whole story, however, and Monday’s game appeared more balanced than Saturday’s. The girls start their season off 0–2.

New dean, home room at YSHS
When students arrive for their first day back to Yellow Springs High School and McKinney Middle School on Wednesday, Aug. 26, the first thing they will notice is a spritely young woman they don’t recognize greeting them at the door. They don’t know her yet, but by the end of the week they might feel like they’ve known Julie Speelman all their lives.

Pam Conine retires—A lifelong learner, lifelong teacher
One of Pam Conine’s favorite sayings is that, if you find a career you love, you never have to work a day in your life. By that standard, Conine figures she’s spent almost no time in her adult life actually working. By most standards, though, Conine has worked long and hard.

YS schools rated ‘Excellent’
At the Nov. 13 meeting of the Yellow Springs Board of Education, Jane Sonenshein of the Ohio School Board presented the board with a banner honoring the district’s having earned an “Excellent” ranking by the Ohio Board of Education.
