Ice cream social fun for children and seniors

Crowds came for the free ice cream, face painting, balloons and carriage rides at Friends Care Community Center’s annual summer ice cream social last Sunday. Revived last year, the tradition dates back decades as a community event organized by the 33-year old senior institution.
“It’s a great community affair for Friends Care,” said FCC board member Todd Leventhal at the event. “Friends Care get so much support from the community, it’s nice to give something back.”
The more than 50 residents who live at the Friends Care nursing and assisted living facilities also enjoyed the festive occasion, many with their friends and family.
“It’s a real nice event for our residents,” said Karl Zalar, executive director of FCC. “They like to get outside and do something different.”
The formula for a successful event was simple for FCC board member Mary White.
“The weather is good. The ice cream is good. There’s nothing not to like.”
