McKee group hosts schools conversation

A community conversation on local schools will take place this Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at the Senior Center, sponsored by the James A. McKee Association.

The event is the second out of three Sunday afternoon discussions on local timely issues. Last week affordable housing was the topic, and next Sunday, April 10, the focus will be the upcoming Village property tax levy.

“We’re calling them community conversations because it gives the community the opportunity to get involved,” McKee group president Rick Kristensen said.

This  Sunday Yellow Springs School District Superintendent Mario Basora and School Board President Sean Creighton will give presentations before the floor is opened up for questions from villagers.

Recently the school board approved about $437,000 in cuts for this year’s budget, including the elimination of the position of school orchestra director and cutting the hours of several positions, including the Mills Lawn counselor, the Mills Lawn gifted program teacher and special education coordinator. The cuts are necessary due to declines in state funding and income tax revenues, according to school officials.
