These balls were originally made for use as floats for fishing nets. The reflective metal coatings were to make them easy to see in the water. People living by the sea shore would find stray floats washed up on the beach and use them as nautical-themed lawn ornaments, on posts made of beach pebbles. Now, of course, they are made to be ornaments, and one of the major manufacturers is in Marietta, Ohio.
