Village schools open doors on Friday

Yellow Springs schools will launch their 2014-2015 school year tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 22. Yellow Springs High School, McKinney Middle School and Mills Lawn Elementary will all welcome students back

New this year will be late morning starts on 14 Wednesdays throughout the year, in order to provide more time for teachers to collaborate and plan for the project-based learning approach to education that the district launched last year and will refine this year, according to Superintendent Mario Basora at the district school board meeting last Thursday.

On those Wednesdays, Mills Lawn students will come to school at 10:05 a.m. and YSHS/McKinney students will arrive at 10:45 a.m. The late-start Wednesdays are Sept. 10 and 24, Oct. 8 and 22, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10 in 2014, and Jan. 14 and 28, Feb. 11 and 25, March 11, April 8 and 22 and May 13 in 2015.

The late-start Wednesdays are a pilot program that will be evaluated at winter break, Basora said.
