Two years ago, in 2019, villagers braved one of the colder days of the year to march in commemoration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and in support of his ideals. Following an in-person march, this year's program will be held virtually. (Photo by Matt Minde)

The theme for the 2021 YS Martin Luther King Day celebration will be “Where Do We Go From Here: Hope and Expectation.” Yellow Springs will celebrate Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 18, with the traditional, in-person MLK Day March, but the MLK Day program following the march will be offered in an online format; those planning to attend the online program must register in advance.

Marchers will follow mask-wearing and physical distancing protocols, and will gather at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, at the public parking lot at Corry Street and Xenia Avenue and step off at 9:45 a.m. The march will move south on Xenia Avenue, turn right on Limestone, and move north on Walnut Street to Dayton Street, returning to Xenia Avenue and Corry Street by 10:30 a.m. For those not attending in person, the march will be livestreamed beginning at 9:30 a.m. at facebook.com/YSSpeakingUpforJustice.

The 2021 YS Martin Luther King Day program will begin at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast through Zoom. Bomani Moyenda will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, and the program will include pre-recorded performances by the World House Choir, area poets, YS Schools Peacemaker Essay winners reading their work and a presentation of the 2021 MLK Peacemaker Award. The program will last approximately 75 minutes. To attend the program, pre-registration is required; to register, visit bit.ly/3qXh0Zv.
