    Rose Elizabeth Chernick passed away on Sunday, June 7. She was 92. She was a resident of Friends Care Assisted Living and was previously a resident for many years of Waukegan, Ill., North Chicago, Ill. and Oconomowoc, Wisc.

    Martha “Marty” J. Givens of Enon died on June 10. She was 65. She was born on Oct. 24, 1943, in Bellefontaine, the daughter of Mary (Johnston) Corry and the late Eugene Corry.

  • Eugene Hagemann

    Eugene “Gene” M. Hagemann passed away Saturday, June 13, surrounded by his family. He was 84. Gene was born in Caledonia on Aug. 8, 1924, the son of the late Casper and Stella (née: Block) Hagemann Sr. He moved to Racine at the age of 7.

  • Yellow Springs Youth Baseball

    The Twins pushed their record to a perfect 3–0 to remain in first place in the Major League last week. The Royals also came on strong with a pair of wins over the Cardinals. The Royals claimed their first win for the season on Wednesday, June 8, with an 11-hit, 16–2 victory over the Cardinals.

  • GunderKline 10th at state

    As the lone Yellow Springs High School representative to run at the state track meet in Columbus on Saturday, June 6, Brock GunderKline finished 10th in the 800-meter run in 1:59.4. That time was a tad slower than the personal record of 1:58.95 he set at the regional meet the previous weekend, but GunderKline beat David Curtin, the Cincinnati Hills runner who finished ahead of him at regionals, and earned a laudable spot in his event as the tenth fastest Div. III runner in Ohio.

  • Challenger Soccer to return to village

    Yellow Springs Soccer, Inc., a non-profit organization which promotes the enhancement of soccer in the Yellow Springs community, will host the third annual Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp this summer. The soccer camp will be held June 22–26 at the boys’ soccer practice field located behind the Yellow Springs High School.

  • Yellow Springs Youth Baseball

    More than 60 area youth kicked off the 2009 Yellow Springs Youth Baseball Minor League season this past weekend. In the season opener Friday, June 5, the Pirates outlasted the Dragons 16–11 in a game that saw both teams pound out 25 hits.

  • Summer open gym for girls basketball players

    The McKinney School and Yellow Springs High School girls basketball program is offering open gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4 to 6 p.m. The sessions began Tuesday, June 23, and are open to any middle and high school girls interested in playing basketball.
