  Crowds came for the free ice cream, face painting, balloons and carriage rides at Friends Care Community Center’s annual summer ice cream social last Sunday. Revived last year, the tradition dates back decades as a community event organized by the 33-year old senior institution.

  Leaders of Friends Care Community announced this week that they will not pursue the senior apartment building they had planned for the Barr property downtown, due to the economic downturn and Friends’ commitment to keeping the rent affordable.

• Low-income senior housing builder presents to Council

  At their May 17 meeting, members of Village Council heard a presentation on low-income senior housing from Lynn Dalton, president of the Franklin Foundation of Columbus. The nonprofit group has built 14 senior communities in Ohio, and is interested in partnering with the Village or local nonprofits to build one in Yellow Springs.

  Yellow Springs Senior Center director Rodney Bean feels that it’s time for a change, and as the center has been oriented toward campaigning for a new space, now seems like a good time to let someone new take the helm. On May 28 he will step down to let that happen.

• FCC senior apartments put on hold

  The senior apartment building that Friends Care Community plans to build downtown has been delayed due to financing issues, Friends Care Director Karl Zalar said last week. Friends had hoped to break ground this spring on the project at the corner of Xenia Avenue and Limestone Street.
