Elwood “Woody” Swartzendruber

Elwood D. Swartzendruber, “Woody,” went to be with his lord and savior on May 8 in Greenville, N.C., after a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 28, 1938, in New Carlisle, Ohio, to Omar and Glenora (Peden) Swartzendruber. He was the last living sibling of their seven children. He will be cremated.

Woody was raised in Clark County, Ohio, and graduated from Northwestern High in 1955. He had a wide variety of jobs in his lifetime, from a hospital orderly, mechanic, steel construction worker, truck driver and garbage man to golf course grounds keeper.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Paul, O. Edward, Earl and Ronald; sisters Ruth and Anna; and a granddaughter, Angela Marie. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marilyn (Hershey) of Havelock, N.C.; daughters Ruth Peterson, of Springfield, Grace Reeve, of Magnolia, N.C., Sandra Manasco of Medway, Ohio, Joyce Meyer, of New Paris, Ohio, and Tara Swartzendruber, of Havelock, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He also has numerous nieces, nephews and cousins across the United States.

A memorial service will be held on June 20 at Freedom Tabernacle Church, located at 4500 Adams Creek Road, Havelock, N.C., at 2 p.m., with a reception following the service at Campground Club House on Campground Road in Havelock, N.C.
