Three students were commended by the National Merit Scholar program.

Three students recognized as National Merit Scholars

Yellow Springs High School seniors, from left, Rory Papania, Elias Mulhall, and Savita Bathija were recognized this month by the National Merit Scholars program. Mullhall is a National Merit semifinalist, Papania is a National Merit commended student, and Bathija is a National Achievement outstanding participant.

According to the National Merit program, of the 1.5 million students who take the pre-SAT in reading, math and writing each year, the top 34,000 high scorers are recognized as commended students, and the top 16,000 are recognized as semifinalists. The semifinalists are eligible to compete in the spring for a National Merit Scholarship.

The National Achievement program recognizes outstanding Black American high school students, awarding the top 3,100 scorers out of the more than 160,000 students who take the pre-SAT each year as outstanding participants.
