The grand opening of the Wheeling Gaunt Community Room at the Yellow Springs Arts Council was celebrated by a standing room-only crowd on Saturday, Aug. 17. The completion of a mural created by local muralist and Yellow Springs native Maiya Celeste coincided with the opening.

Speaking during the event were Cheryl Durgans, project manager for the Wheeling Gaunt Sculpture Project, artist and sculptor Brian Maughn, John Gudgel and Kevin McGruder of The 365 Project and Celeste. Celeste told the crowd that the symbolism along the border was inspired by a book created by Mikasa Simms’ first-grade class at Mills Lawn Elementary School. Along with hosting a variety of classes, lectures and meetings, the Wheeling Gaunt Room will also be a major hub for The 365 Project’s Blacks in Yellow Springs tours.
