You are correct. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control emphasized in their official recommendation that while people should wear masks to help slow the spread, it should be used in conjunction with current social-distancing measures, not in place of them:
It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus. CDC is additionally advising the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. The CDC additionally recommended that people wear cloth masks, so as not to exacerbate the shortages of the masks needed for heathcare workers and first responders. They have a guide to creating your own mask, and tips for using them here.
