Only 1 birthday wish: save manatees!

Mackenzie Horton, age 9, is a little girl with a big love for manatees. In fact, for her recent birthday she asked that friends and family, rather than give gifts to her, instead make donations to help save the large, gentle sea creatures.

Mackenzie’s goal is to raise $200 by August 15, and so far she’s raised $160. Her mother has created a website for the effort, and donations can be made at mackenziesmanateefund.weebly.com.

Manatees often need rescue because they are gentle, curious creatures that graze in shallow water — consequently, they are at risk from run-ins with boats. The effort that Mackenzie is supporting with her donations is the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership through the Columbus Zoo.
