Fundraiser to support local midwives-to-be

Two local women are hosting an Adult Spelling Bee this Sunday, Jan. 10, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Emporium as a fundraiser to help launch them toward new careers as midwives.

The women, Ash Dasuqi and Pamela Williams, plan to travel to El Paso, Texas, in February to enroll in Maternidad La Luz, a midwifery school that also operates an affordable clinic for women on both sides of the border. Both women are excited about the possibility of working in the clinic as part of their year-long program.

Sunday’s event will include the Adult Spelling Bee in which teams of three compete, along with a silent auction of gift certificates from local businesses and a cash beer and wine tasting bar. The event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10 to $15 for observers and $20 to $30 for spelling bee participants.

See the Jan. 7 News for a more detailed story of the event and the women’s interest in midwifery.
