YS Schools Facilities Task Force sets second community meeting

The Yellow Springs Schools Facilities Task Force has set a second community meeting to present the results of its nine-month exploration into the needs of the district’s school buildings and to gather feedback on its findings.

The meeting, which follows the initial community gathering Dec. 10, will be Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 6–7:30 p.m., in the meeting room at the Yellow Springs public library.

At the December meeting, task force facilitator Mel Marsh, speaking on behalf of the group, said the task force members anticipated recommending that the school board put more money into building maintenance and toward that end consider putting an increased permanent improvement levy before voters. In addition, the task force members also plan to recommend that the district approach identified facility upgrades by investing “in significant improvements to both buildings rather than near complete replacements.”

In addition to the Jan. 22 meeting, task force members are planning smaller gatherings with various groups and neighbors in town.

The group intends to make a presentation to the school board at the board’s next regular meeting, Thursday, Feb. 13, which begins at 7 p.m. in the John Graham Room at Mills Lawn School.
