Food pantry seeks holiday donations
- Published: December 12, 2014
As it does most years, demand at the Yellow Springs Food Pantry has gone up during the holiday season. According to pantry director Patty McAllister, about 35 families will come to the pantry for food during its open hours this month. The pantry is generally open the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 2 to 4 p.m., but this month it will next be open Tuesday, Dec. 23, since the fourth Thursday is the Christmas holiday.
The pantry is located at the Yellow Springs United Methodist Church, located at 202 S. Winter Street. The only criteria for food pantry recipients is that they live in the 45387 zip code. Unlike other food pantries, the Yellow Springs pantry offers paper items such as paper towels and toilet paper along with canned goods and boxed food items.
Donations are always welcome, according to McAllister. They can be deposited at food pantry barrels at Tom’s Market or in the lobby of the John Bryan Center or taken to the pantry during open hours.
After 11 years as the volunteer director of the pantry, McAllister at the end of this month will turn over the reins to Paula Hurwitz. However, she plans to stay involved as a volunteer.
