Antioch College is sponsoring a forum on college community governance on Friday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom at One Morgan Place.

At a public gathering on Weds., Aug. 11, Community Resources board members gave an update on the Center for Business and Education.

Tax revenues for the Village of Yellow Springs have continued to drop in the first half of 2010, according to Village Finance Director Sharon Potter, but at a lower rate than in 2009. While Village leaders are hopeful that this smaller drop indicates that the economic downturn is easing up at the local level, they are feeling cautious regarding costly new projects.

At their Aug. 2 meeting, members of Village Council discussed how best to move forward with the Village’s Economic Development Revolving Loan Fund, a fund designed to aid local economic development by enabling the Village to loan money to existing and start-up businesses.

At their Aug. 2 Village Council meeting, Council members unanimously approved a resolution that allows the Village to move ahead with assessing local property owners on the east side of Xenia Avenue the cost of repairing sidewalks deemed substandard and unsafe. “This project has been on our radar a long time,” said Council member Karen Wintrow.

Gariot Louima never intended to live in Ohio. In fact, he’d never been to Ohio before coming to interview for the position of director of communications at the newly-revived Antioch College. When he told his sister, who like him had grown up in the Haitian community in Miami, Florida, about the interview, she asked him if there were any black people in the state.

Reflecting the historic Antioch College emphasis on social justice, the revived Antioch College is sponsoring a series of events this summer focusing on the civil rights movement, especially Freedom Summer in 1964.

At its July 8 meeting, the Yellow Springs Board of Education approved the renewal of a contract with the Greene County Educational Services Center, or GCESC, for special education services for the coming school year, although most board members expressed a reluctance to do so, given the high price tag.

The income tax decline in the Yellow Springs school budget has been news in recent weeks, and Village government has also seen a downturn in income tax in the past two years. However, the Village tax loss is significantly less than that of the school district, and Village Manager Mark Cundiff sees reason to believe that the worst is over.
