Youth empowerment HRC goal
In the past year, the Village Human Relations Commission has worked to empower youth leadership, address citizen complaints regarding difficulties with police, introduce new events to strengthen neighborhoods and support those suffering from economic hardships, according to HRC member Joan Chappelle at the April 19 meeting of Village Council.

Council approves partner registry
At their Sept. 8 meeting, members of Village Council voted unanimously in favor of a first reading of an ordinance that will revise Village ordinances to add a domestic partnership registry along with language that prohibits discrimination or intimidation based on sexual orientation. Energy group tasked to reduce carbon footprint
At their April 20 meeting, members of Village Council unanimously approved a resolution that establishes an energy task force for Yellow Springs. The task force, or ETF, will be charged with working with Village staff to develop a strategic plan toward Council’s 2009 goal to “develop a comprehensive policy that addresses global warming and seeks to reduce the carbon footprint of our community.”

Council passes ‘09 budget
At their April 6 meeting, members of Village Council unanimously approved the second, or final, reading of the 2009 Village budget. Council had approved the budget’s first reading on March 16.

Youth group finds voice in old village tradition of discourse
It’s 3 p.m. on a Sunday, and many Yellow Springs youth are shooting hoops at the gym, playing SingStar at a friend’s, procrastinating on homework assignments or lounging at home, soaking up the week’s last hours of freedom from responsibility.

Youth, elders dialogue about drug dogs, trust
According to several Yellow Springs youth, the schools and the village are not as supportive and inclusive of youth as they should be, and the youth need more of a voice in making the decisions that affect them.

Council approves Village manager search survey
In the quest to find a new Village manager, Village Council at its meeting Monday, Aug. 4, approved a survey to gauge what Council members, Village staff and village residents care most about in a Village manager.
