  • Schools lose football and students

    The decision of the Yellow Springs High School administration not to field a football team this fall for the first time since 1993 has impacted the school community. While the low number of players ultimately forced the program’s closure earlier this month, at least one local student has since chosen to transfer to a school with an active football team, and several others are considering doing the same.

  • Bulldog Sports Roundup

    The YSHS Bulldog boys soccer team opened its 2010 fall campaign with a 3–0 loss to the Chaminade-Julienne Eagles last Thursday, Aug. 26. Just five minutes into the match a careless Bulldog foul 20 yards in front of their own goal set up a direct free kick for the Eagles. Despite the wall of Bulldogs blocking the kick, Chaminade netted the goal to take the lead.

    The Yellow Springs Aquatic Club (the Seadogs) will hold an organizational meeting Tuesday, Sept. 7, 6 p.m., in the Yellow Springs Library meeting room. The group will elect officers and discuss grants, the yard sale, the survey and ways of making next year’s swim season even better.

    Zach McHugh and Lois Miller won this year’s 26th Annual Village Fun Run. McHugh, a Yellow Springs High School junior, beat a hasty path around the Yellow Springs course to improve from a third-place finish in 2009 to win the event in 11:21. Team Captains Mitchell Brickson and Gabe Amrhein placed second and third overall.

    Registration for the Yellow Springs youth recreational soccer leagues will be held at the Morgan Building fields on Saturday, Aug. 28, beginning at 10:30 a.m. A skills clinic and evaluation will follow at 11 a.m. All first- through eighth-grade boys and girls interested in playing should attend.

  • A glorious finale for t-ball

    Sixty children and their families and friends came out for our season finale to play ball with us, eat a hot dog or two and collect themselves a lovely little Perry League trophy. It was a perfect end to Jason Newsome’s successful first year as the league’s new program coordinator.

    The Yellow Springs High School boys soccer team will begin pre-season practice on Monday, Aug. 9, with two practices a day: 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 4:30–6:30 p.m. All those interested in playing soccer should bring a soccer ball, water to drink, cleats, running shoes and shin guards to each practice.

  • Yellow Springs Youth Baseball

    The Twins managed to win their last two games of the season and maintain an undefeated record to win the major league regular season championship for the second year in a row. The first of their final two games was a 6–2 win over the Athletics on Monday, July 26. The teams were tied at 2 through the fourth inning…

  • T-ballers move with panache

    We had a great turn out for our penultimate night of t-ball on Friday, July 30. Eight-year-old Eamonn Cary came, his mom Callie Cary said, “To help out Jim-Jim.” He is a strong batter now, hitting the ball easily over everyone’s head. And he was and is a terrific helper, catching balls for me at home plate and spending part of his evening throwing balls out with Erica Lindemann…
