  • A Yellow Springs Fourth of July picture book

Saturday’s 4th of July festivities benefited from beautiful summer weather. In the afternoon hundreds lined Xenia Avenue for the annual small-town parade and many more covered the ground at Gaunt Park for the evening’s live music and fireworks. Whizzing through the parade downtown, Antioch School student Zay Crawford (front) and alumnus Max Mullin balanced their unicycles (one a giraffe!) between floats, candy throwers and water sprayers. • Music of the Trees, for the trees

The Glen Helen Benefit Concert begins at 7 p.m. and features original songs by The Trees, including band members Amy “Blue,” Scott Lindberg, Matt Minde, and guest percussionist Ryan Stinson. (Submitted photo by Eliza Minde-Berman)

A fundraiser event, Honoring the Glen Helen Concert, to benefit the Glen Helen Association will be held Saturday, June 27, at Antioch University Midwest.

  • Rainbows in the rain

Despite the punishing sun, music prevailed at this year’s Street Fair.

  • Pig out and about

Antioch College fourth-year student Perrin Ellsworth went nose to nose with Penelope the therapy pig.

  • Aaron’s Lens – The Yellow Springs

The namesake of our town has always been a beautiful landmark and popular pull for out-of-towners. Here are a few images that I hope will represent its full beauty.

  • Out on a limb

In her commencement speech last Thursday, May 28, Yellow Springs High School valedictorian Mollye Malone described her bent toward documenting every moment with “shameless” selfies, then telescoped her smart phone for two such records: one of Malone and the Class of 2015 and one of Malone and a gym full of proud families, friends and teachers. • Mudding puppies at the Antioch School

In April, students and teachers started the straw bale playhouse project — which will have an open loft, a ladder and a slide — with a frame, followed by bales; last week they applied several coats of mud plaster. For more on the straw bale playhouse, go to antiochschool.org. (Photo by Lauren Heaton)

The Antioch School students have been working with builders-in-residence Beth and Andy Holyoke to build a straw bale playhouse of the kindergartner’s design.

  • ‘Shout’ in the streets

Local yoga teacher and choreographer Katy Gaines led the group of local seniors in the dance, which they learned at previous rehearsals. Last year seniors boogied to “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” (Photo by Megan Bachman)

Last week the Yellow Springs Senior Center organized a flash mob dance to the Isley Brothers 1959 hit “Shout” to commemorate National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

  • I thought that I should never see…

On Wednesday morning, May 27, Village of YS crew workers and YS Tree Committee worked together to plant seven downtown trees including Princeton elm, American hornbeam, yellowwood and Greenspire linden. The trees were chosen for their vibrant flowering colors, variations of leaves and differing tree shapes. (Photo by Suzanne Szempruch)
